December 2012 - Appearing in Omega Peaks, Vol 65 No 3 (p. 6)
Upsilon Chapter News - By Janet Steiner
The program for the November meeting of Upsilon chapter was a presentation by the Chaffee County Boys and Girls Club. Speakers were director Paul Martz and board member Karen Dills. They discussed the purposes and history of Boys and Girls Club. Many of the Upsilon members weren't aware of how the program worked and left the meeting with new insight into an important part of our county.
In October, Omega State President Donna Hoover, 2nd Vice-President Dr. Sue Pettit, and Treasurer Lilly Vigil visited. We enjoyed eating, visiting and receiving information from the state level.
Our chapter has been able to help teachers in both ends of the county. We made donations to the Longfellow Kindergarten snack program in Salida and to the Buena Vista Special Education Department for hygiene supplies.
Our Books for Babies program continues. With boxes of bagged books, we are in a holding pattern. However, the newspaper is full of announcements of newborns, so it won't be too long before we will need more. We help fund the project by delivering flowers for the local flower shop on Valentine's and Mother's Day.
Be sure to check out our web site http://dkgupsilon.weebly.com. It is updated and kept current by member, Cindy Demarest. It is a good way to stay aware of the chapter events, including a surprise photo or two.
Also in the December edition of Omega Peaks, p. 5:
Coletta Sanchez was recognized as a 30-Year Member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Congratulations to Coletta!

Dear Ladies,
I hope you all enjoyed a fantastic and filling Thanksgiving!!
Upsilon Chapter met on November 13, 2012 in Buena Vista at the Chamber of Commerce Building at 5 p.m. The members present enjoyed an informational program about the Chaffee County Boys' and Girls' Club by Karen Dills, a Board Member, and Paul Martz, Interim Director. Members now have a better understanding of this program. Bonnie Young and Coletta Sanchez were hostesses and served a healthy snack. Thanks, ladies, it was delicious!
We can now announce that Carole & Randy Barnes were "Buena Vista's Citizens of the Year!" Congratulations, as they both deserve the recognition. Bonnie surprised them with flowers at the Awards Banquet.
I shared the Upsilon Chapter Rules and a revised copy of the Program Committees from the Omega State Board Meeting. The membership decided not to revise our Chapter Rules until after the Omega State Convention as the Program Committees will be voted on in then.
Janet Steiner volunteered to write an article for the Omega State Peaks. Thanks so much for doing that, Janet.
Coletta Sanchez received a Certificate of Membership for 30 years from Omega State. Yeah, Coletta!!!
The membership voted on donating $75 to the Chaffee County Boys' and Girls' Club. I received a very nice thank you from Karen Dills. She said it was an unexpected surprise.
Christmas Brunch will be in Salida at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on December 8, 2012 at 11 a.m. The cost is $12, and I need an RSVP by December 2, 2012. If I do not hear from you by e-mail or a phone call, I will call you. We had to guarantee 10 people. Members, Janet, Coletta, Bonnie, Marie, Dorothy, Shirley, and myself will attend. Betty will not be able to join. Also don't forget a donation to "Toys for Tots" and World Fellowships. (Yes, I have a story!!)

Dear Ladies,
Hope you had a Spooky Halloween! On October 13, 2012, we had a salad pot luck luncheon in Buena Vista at the Chamber of Commerce Building thanks to Billie as the Grace Fellowship Hall kitchen is being remodeled. Our guests were Donna Hoover, Omega State President; Sue Pettit, Omega State Second Vice President; and Lilly Vigil, Omega State Treasurer. Unfortunately, weather kept members from Alpha Chi from attending, and school conflicts kept members from Alpha Sigma from attending. The salads were delicious, President Hoover gave information on Education in Excellence and chapter rules, the conversation was interesting, and we even sang Halloween Carols!!
I attended the Omega State Board meeting on October 20, 2012 in Denver. The membership discussed Educational Excellence Committees and definitions that will be voted on in June at the Omega State Conference. I have copies of the committees and definitions and when these are okayed, Upsilon Chapter will be able to move forward with the changes.
While at the meeting Coletta's words, "Theresa, you should run for a state office," haunted me. Therefore, I filled out a nomination form for Omega State Corresponding Secretary and actually mailed it.
Dorothy Sanchez and her daughter prepared the Books of Program, and Dorothy passed them out at the meeting. A BIG THANK YOU TO DOROTHY AND SUSAN!! For those of you who received the books, Carole Barnes e-mail is incorrect. If you did not received a book, I will be more than happy to mail it if you aren't able to attend the next meeting. Just let me know.
Shirley Lambert, Upsilon Treasurer, has collected all the dues. YEAH!
Our Christmas Brunch will be December 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Salida at the United Methodist Hall. Cost is $12 with a guarantee of 10. We will also be donating to "Toys for Tots" and collecting for World Fellowship. This would be a great time to invite prospective members. I will be calling for RSVP's around December 1.
NOTE: The next meeting will be November 13, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in Buena Vista at the Chamber of Commerce Building. Our program will be given by Karen Dills about the Boys and Girls Club. Hostesses are Coletta Sanchez and Bonnie Young.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you November 13.

Hello, Ladies,
Our September 18 meeting was very interesting. Norma Sandoval, a life long resident, shared her school memories as a student and then as a teacher. A big "Thank You" to Norma for sharing.
We voted to give the Salida Regional Library the money in the Tuesday Evening Library fund. The CD does not mature until March, so that's when the library will receive the money. Shirley and Dorothy are looking into the Rose Ridgeway Scholarship Fund. We are not sure if the last recipient has paid back all the money or not. Then we need to decide what to do with the Scholarship Fund.
I shared the Omega State 4 Star certificate that Upsilon received at the Omega State Conference. We need to shoot for this again next year! Carole Barnes and myself are continuing to volunteer in the schools. Dorothy Sanchez has finished the program books and will hand them out on Saturday, October 13.
The Chapter voted to stop giving an honorarium to Women Student Teachers in Chaffee County. The membership decided to give the money to teachers/grade levels/schools that need a little help. This year we gave $40 to the kindergarten teachers at Longfellow Elemetry School in Salida for morning snacks. Then we gave $40 to the Special Ed. Department at Avery Parsons Elementary School in Buena Vista for hygiene supplies.
Biography forms were passed out to members present. If you did not receive one, we don't need them until March, and I will make sure everyone receives a form. In March we are going to update and look at Upsilon Chapter scrapbooks.
Our next meeting is October 13, 2012 at noon at the Grace Church Fellowship Hall. We have invited Omega State President Donna Hoover. She is bringing Omega State 2nd Vice President Dr. Sue Pettit. We, also, invited Omega State Treasurer, Lilly Vigil. An invitation went out to Alpha Sigma (Leadville) and Alpha Chi (Summit), and so far there may be two ladies from Alpha Chi joining us.
I NEED TO KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON ATTENDING OUR OCTOBER AFTERNOON MEETING. PLEASE E-MAIL ME OR CALL. IF I DON'T HEAR FROM YOU I WILL CALL ON WEDNESDAY EVENING. WE NEED TO BRING A SALAD, MAYBE 1 OR 2 DESSERTS, AND CRACKERS OR ROLLS.
Membership dues are due by October 31 to Shirley Lambert,1230 F Street, Salida, CO 81201. Active dues are $65 and Reserve dues are $37.
Thanks for all you do for Upsilon Chapter.

Now we have to do it again next year.
On August 11, 2012 I attended the Omega State Training Session. The focus was the Educational Excellence Document. I don't think our Chapter has to change much except committee names.
The Executive Board of Upsilon Chapter met in Salida on August 7, 2012 to come up with programs, times,
dates, and hostesses for the year. Please remember dues are the same.....$65 for Active and $37 for Reserve due by October 31, 2012. Officers elected were as follows: President: Theresa Cortese; 1st Vice President: Dorothy Sanchez; 2nd Vice President: Beth Dwyer; Recording Secretary: Kathy Roman; Corresponding Secretary: Denise Scifres; Treasurer: Shirley Lambert; Parliamentarian: Billie Love. I also want to thank all the members for their time and talents given to Upsilon Chapter.!!!
There are two student teachers this semester at the Buena Vista Avery Parsons Elementary School. They are Donna Bottrell and Theresa King. Janet Steiner delivered an invitation to both for our April Brunch. There were no recommendations for membership. Maybe next year!
Members worked on the Strategic Action Plan for Communications. I e-mailed them to you for your review but will attach them to this newsletter, and will mail a hard copy to those who don't have e-mail. Thank you for your work on this continuing project. Next year, I hope to do membership and legislation.
On April 28, 2012 at 11:00 AM, we will have a brunch at the Salida Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Salida. The cost is $12. I did have to guarantee 10 people. At the brunch we will 1) Initiate new officers, 2) Recognize our Red Rose Recipient, 3) present scholarships, 4) have membership recognition of Jane Melien and Coletta Sanchez, 5) recognize student teachers, and 6) enjoy the time!!
Bonnie Young will be asking names of members who would be willing to deliver flowers on Mother's Day. If you have a suggestion for a program for next year, please let me know. Thank you for all your support in hard work!!!

Hello Ladies,
Thank you to all those who attended our monthly meeting on February 21 at the Grace Church Annex in Buena Vista. Janet Steiner and Kathy Roman gave an update on the Books for Babies Project. Thank you to all who helped fold brochures, put labels inside the books, bagged the books, and are storing the books. Please be thinking of ways to continue to fund the project. A big "Thank You" to Janet and Kathy for all their hard work.
Bonnie Young updated the membership on the Valentine's flower delivery. There were 4 members that were able to help. As of the February meeting, we did not have a check. Bonnie stated that the flower store has been sold. She is going to see if the new owners are willing to have us deliver flowers on Mother's Day and would get a "contract" with them for the pay per hour. A big "Thank You" to Bonnie for all her work.
No one has asked for an application for our local scholarship. Even though the due date was March 1, I would be willing to give anyone an application now or at our March meeting. Please consider this great opportunity.
No one has asked for a membership form. We need the membership form NOW so we can accept new members at our March meeting. Let me know if you need a form.
There are only 2 student teachers this semester in Chaffee County. Both are located in Buena Vista. We will send them an invitation to our April 28 brunch.
On February 21, after a brief business meeting, the membership worked on DKG's Strategic Action Goals. We finished Finance and plan on working on Communication and Membership at the March meeting. Thanks for all your hard work!
March 17 is DKG Omega State's Spring Board Meeting in Denver. I am going to attend and will bring back any new information to you. Pictures from the High Tea on January 28 are now on Omega State's website. Please check them out......yes, there is a picture with me in it!!!!
On April 28 in Salida at the Methodist Church fellowship hall, we will have a brunch at 11:00 AM. The cost is $12.00. I had to guarantee 10 reservations. During the brunch, we will initiate new members and install officers for the biennium 2012-2014. We will have a Red Rose Recognition and present our local scholarship(s). Please plan to attend.
Our next meeting will be on March 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the Grace Church Fellowship Hall. Hostesses are Dorothy Sanchez and Shirley Lambert. See you at our next meeting.

Hello, Ladies,
We had our Delta Kappa Gamma meeting on January 17, 2012 in Buena Vista at the Grace Church fellowship hall. A fabulous program was presented by Billie Love and her daughter, Susan Shampine. The program was about their cruise to South America and Antarctica. The pictures from there were beautiful! Thanks for a great program Billie and Susan!!! Hostesses for our January meeting were Bonnie Young and Coletta Sanchez who put on a real spread!! Thank you, ladies. Our next meeting will be a working one---strategic planning.
After the January 17 meeting, the members present folded the brochures that go into the bags for Books for Babies. On January 23, Carole Barnes helped put labels in all the books. Then on January 24, Janet Steiner, Kathy Roman, Marie Armstrong, and I filled all the bags. When we were finished I delivered 2 boxes containing 230 bags to the hospital. Janet Steiner wrote an article and sent it and a picture of our "bagging party" to the local papers in Buena Vista and Salida and to the Omega State Peaks Newsletter. I heard several great comments from the teachers at Longfellow about the article, and I hope it leads to donations for our project. A big "thank you" goes to Janet and Kathy for all their time and work spent on this worthwhile project!!!!
On January 28, I went to Denver to celebrate Omega State's 75th Birthday with High Tea at the Brown Palace. We had a room to ourselves and, of course, everything was wonderful. The atmosphere was "fancy," the food was delicious, and the program was quite interesting. I was asked to read 4 lines about Cora Carolyn Burns, one of the Omega State Founders. Other members read 4 lines about the other 16 founders. There were scrap books for the ladies to look through. We ended with a commitment ceremony.
Cindy Demarest put pictures on our website from the Books for Babies work day and the High Tea. Please look at them. Thank you again, Cindy, for keeping the website up to date.
Bonnie Young will be coordinating with the flower store on delivering Valentine's flowers on February 14. If you are able to help, just let Bonnie know.
Our next meeting will be on February 21 at 6:00 p.m. in Buena Vista at the Grace Church fellowship hall. If there is a problem with using the Fellowship Hall, I will let you know. They are doing some remodeling at the hall. Hostesses for February are Denise Scifres and Janet Steiner.
Our local scholarship applications are due March 1, potential members’ names are also due by March1, and the nominations committee is working on a slate of officers for the next biennium.
Thanks for all you do.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope everyone enjoyed this past holiday season. Upsilon Chapter held their annual Christmas brunch on December 10, 2011 at the Salida Methodist Church Hall. After reading the "Collect," 10 members enjoyed a delicious brunch. We loved the wonderful food provided by the women!! Donations for Toys for Tots were collected, and Kathy Roman took them to Buena Vista. President Theresa Cortese read a story, "Sisters," and then money for DKG World Fellowship was collected. The amount collected was about $133.
There was a short business meeting. Those present signed a card for Billie Love. She has been ill and was unable to attend the brunch. Since the jewelry company that DKG uses has stopped making membership tabs, it was decided that Theresa should ask Dave Morgan, a jeweler in Salida, if there was any way he could get them for us. The decade pins that are now available are $24.75. If we cannot find a cheaper pin, we may have to stop or think of something else to recognize membership years. If anyone has other suggestions, please let Theresa know.
Since our music chairperson was unable to attend, Theresa had a game about Christmas songs. Members had to give the correct title of a song by listening to synonyms of the titles. It worked the mind! I want to thank Shirley Lambert for the article about Upsilon Chapter in the recent Omega Peaks Bulletin. Also, a thank you again to Cindy Demarest for our new website. Cindy is keeping it current and has pictures from our Christmas brunch on the site.
The nominations committee will be working on a slate of officers for the 2012-2014 biennium. Chairperson is Susan Ragan. Coletta Sanchez and Shirley Lambert are on that committee. Five (5) of the annual/biennial reports have been submitted to Omega State. Shirley is working on the other three (3)--Communications, Educational Excellence, and Finance. All of these are due February 1, 2012.
The next meeting will held on January 17, 2012 at the Grace Church Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. Our program will be given by Billie Love and Susan Shampine on their tour of Antarctica. Hostesses will be Bonnie Young and Coletta Sanchez. We will also be trying to work on a Strategic Action Plan for finance especially the Books for Babies. Also, we will be talking about delivery of flowers on Valentine's Day.
FYI: Local Chapter Scholarship applications are due by March 1, 2012. New Membership forms are also due March 1, 2012. Thanks for all your hard work in Upsilon Chapter!
See you on the 17th.
