November Newsletter
Hello Ladies,
On October 10 at 1 p.m., six (6) members met at the "new" Longfellow Elementary School in Salida. A tour was given by Principal Chuck McKenna. Members asked questions and were able to visit all rooms. One favorite was the library, since it had some beautiful views!
After the tour, members adjourned to the home of Theresa Cortese. Refreshments were served and a meeting ensued.
The program books were passed out. Dorothy Sanchez and her daughter, Susan Felt, did an excellent job again this year. Shirley Lambert, treasurer was instructed to write a receipt for Susan for the donation of her paper, ink, and time. THANK YOU SUSAN AND DOROTHY. To keep expenses down, I will not mail program books until after the new year.
Upsilon's webmaster, Cindy Demarest, sent a brochure that the Chapter can use for membership. It was in color, had information about the Chapter, told about scholarships both internationally and locally, and gave our website along with my e-mail. I have run some off and hope to give them out when I substitute. A BIG THANK YOU TO CINDY.
Shirley Lambert reported that the Tuesday Evening Library interest fund had been charged a penalty for non-use. It was decided that the money needed to be given to the Salida Regional Library as soon as Shirley and Dorothy can get to the bank. Then we will only have the Tuesday Evening Scholarship Fund CD.
The Omega State Fall Board meeting was October 18, 2014 in Lone Tree, CO. It was held at a new location. I will give my report at the next Upsilon Chapter meeting.
Carole Barnes is supposed to give the program at the November meeting. However, Carole and her family have been dealing with some issues: illness and the passing of her mother. We want Carole to know she and her family are in our thoughts.
Shirley had collected all but two DKG dues from members the last I knew. Hopefully, everyone paid. Shirley needed to get her forms in before November 15.
Reminder: December Brunch December 6 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Salida. Cost is $12. This will be the last time the UMW will cook for us unless new leadership steps forward.
Our next meeting will be a November 18, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. at the Grace Church Fellowship Hall in Buena Vista. Hostesses are Janet Steiner and Kathy Roman.

October Newsletter
Hello, ladies,
On September 16, 2014 Upsilon Chapter met at the Grace Church Fellowship Hall in Buena Vista at 4 p.m.
It was the first meeting of the year so the members discussed the program agenda. We have one problem in April. The Methodist Women will not be able to host our brunch. We can either find another place or do a salad luncheon. Something to think about for the future. First Vice-President Dorothy Sanchez has the program books ready and will pass them out at the October meeting.
I updated the membership about the State Convention held in Grand Junction in May. Upsilon Chapter received a 4 STAR Award. YEAH!!! The Chapter gave me $100 towards the Convention however, I donated it back to the Chapter.
Denise Scifres was awarded our local scholarship but because of a family emergency was not able to go on her walking tour of Philadelphia with her granddaughter, so she returned the money.
Shirley Lambert and I audited the books for 2013-2014. All was okay thanks to Shirley!! Dues for 2014-2015 are $65 for active and $37 for reserve. They need to be paid by October 31, 2014 either in person or you can send them to Shirley Lambert.
"Books for Babies" received $500 from Monarch. Denise's daughter made me aware of monies for projects and Janet Steiner filled out the application and e-mailed. A thank you card was sent. Now our project fund is quite solvent. Since we put the money we get from flower deliveries in the "Books for Babies", members voted to put the flower delivery money into the general fund to be used for the stipends given to the two school districts. We received $120 from Mother's Day deliveries. Thanks to all the members who were able to make the deliveries.
I passed out the updated Chapter Rules and SAP. I will also have them available at the next meeting. Members fixed the wording on the stipend given to the two school districts.
Around 5:30 p.m., members enjoyed pizza, salad, & cookies.
Our next meeting will be in Salida at the "new" Longfellow Building on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 1 p.m. Connie Edmonds, school secretary, will be giving us a tour. FYI There are stairs in the new building. Following the tour we will come to my house for our meeting and refreshments provided by Shirley Lambert and myself.
Hope to see you all October 10.

May Newsletter
May 6, 2014
Hello, ladies,
This is the final newsletter until we start meeting again in September.
A delicious (again) brunch was made by the United Methodist Women's Organization in Salida on April 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. The Chapter welcomed three guests, our Omega State President, Beth Barzdukas; Cindy Demarest, our member from Pennsylvania; and Gene Avery, a former member of DKG. It was so very nice to have all three ladies share our day.
A short meeting was held. The membership voted to give $100 to the President (me) to use at the Omega State Conference in June. Billie Love, chair of the Tuesday Evening Scholarship Committee, presented an application that will be used next year in awarding the scholarship. The membership accepted the application. Thanks so much to Billie and her committee, Bonnie, Beth, and Coletta. Upsilon Chapter will again help Mt. Meadows Florist deliver Mother's Day flowers on May 10. Bonnie will coordinate that. We made $100 on the Valentine deliveries. Thanks to Bonnie for keeping this fund raising project for "Books for Babies" going. Beth Barzdukas, Omega State President, talked briefly about the DKG Bulletin, DKG Scholarships, and the Omega State Merit Award. Cindy Demarest gave an update on her life since leaving Salida 14 years ago.

Beth Barzdukas installed officers for the biennium of 2014-2016: President ---Theresa Cortese; First Vice President--Dorothy Sanchez; Second Vice President--Beth Dwyer; Secretary---Kathy Roman; Corresponding Secretary--Denise Scifres. Treasurer--Shirley Lambert and Parliamentarian--Billie Love were appointed.

The Red Rose Recognition was presented to Cindy Demarest--Upsilon Webmaster and Upsilon Past President; Bonnie Young read a brief biography, and Theresa Cortese presented a red rose to Cindy.
Congratulations to all of Upsilon's members!!!!
There is one item members need to ponder. Do we want to change our meeting time to early afternoon? Many of our members have a difficult time getting out at night, especially in the winter. Please let me know your thoughts. We did have one meeting this year at 4 p.m.
Have a wonderful summer!!

Hello, Ladies,
Upsilon Chapter met on March 18, 2013 at the Congregational Church Choir Room in Buena Vista at 4 p.m. The
secretary was not present so Denise Scifres, Corresponding Secretary, was asked to take minutes. She read the minutes from February, and there were two corrections. The treasurer reported that $181 was collected for DKG's "Schools in Africa."
Billie Love was recognized at the Omega State Spring Board Meeting by the Bylaws and Standing Rules Committee. She received a certificate and rose pin.
Theresa gave a quick overview of what went on at the Omega State Spring Board Meeting. She reminded members that the Conference will be in Grand Junction on June 5-7.
Bonnie Young reported that 6 hours was donated to flower deliveries on Valentine's Day. We have received a check for $100 which will be put into the "Books for Babies Fund." She asked if members would be willing to deliver flowers for Mother's Day on May 10. The answer was "Yes!" Members have done it for several years and are getting very good at it! Thanks to all the members that helped in February and are willing to work in May!!!!
Upsilon Scholarship applications were due. Theresa received one. We are able to give two. The scholarship will be awarded in April.
The newly formed Scholarship Committee (Tuesday Evening Club Scholarship Fund) with Billie Love as chair met
prior to the meeting. The committee which consists of Beth Dwyer, Bonnie Young, and Coletta Sanchez set up criteria for an application and amount for the scholarship which will be starting school year 2014-2015. It will be set up for one young lady from Salida and one from Buena Vista who are going to pursue a career in education. A final draft will be brought to the membership in April. Thanks for all the work that these ladies have done!!

March Newsletter
March 8, 2014
Hello, Ladies,
Upsilon Chapter met on February 18, 2014 at the Grace Church Fellowship Hall Annex at 6:00 p.m. Janet Steiner, a scholarship recipient, gave a program on her travels this past summer. Some states she visited were Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Kansas. Janet took the back roads so saw many "different" things than on the usually Interstate. Thank you, Janet!
Evening Club monies was discussed. Janet Steiner made a motion to give all the money in the "Library CD" to the Library with the stipulation that all money must be spent on reference materials. Kathy Roman seconded and the members present voted for the motion. Beth Dwyer made a motion to earmark the "Scholarship CD" for senior girls in both Salida and Buena Vista going into education for the next school year. Billie Love seconded and the membership vote for the motion. A committee of Billie, Beth, Bonnie, and Colletta will come up with an application form.
A collection for the "Schools in Africa" and $178 was received. Thank you, ladies!
We discussed the 3 items from our Chapter Strengthening survey. Membership is the key factor in all three. The Chapter needs more, younger, eager members. It seems the "younger" educators just don't want to "join" or go
to "meetings". This seems to be a continuous battle.
Flowers were delivered on Feb. 14 by 2 groups. It seemed to go well. Bonnie Young, coordinator, was not present, but hopefully at the next meeting we will learn how much was made.
All reports to the State and International were received by Feb. 1. Thank you to all committee chairs!!
Cards were sent to Betty Farrington and Bonnie Young. We all hope that both ladies are doing much better.
A big "thank you" to Janet Steiner for getting articles in the local papers and Omega Peaks about our monetary
contributions to the elementary schools in Salida and Buena Vista.
Our end of the year brunch will be held on April 26 at 11a.m. at the Salida Methodist Fellowship Hall. The cost will be $12 and we must guarantee 10 people. We are planning on 2 special guests---Beth Barzdukas, Omega State President and Cindy Demarest, our out-of-state member. We will be voting on a new slate of officers. Also, scholarships will be given.
If you need a scholarship application, I will have them at the next meeting.
Because of a conflict at the Grace Fellowship Hall our next meeting, March 18, 2014, will be held at the Congregational Church at 217 Crossman Ave. We need to use the back door which is across from the Post Office and the choir room is the first room on the right. There is also a time change---we will meet at 4:00 p.m. Hostesses are Carole Barnes and Dorothy Sanchez.

February Newsletter
February 8, 2014
Dear Ladies,
Upsilon Chapter met January 21, 2014 in Buena Vista at the Grace Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. Our program was presented by Kathy Roman. Kathy visited Panama and she gave us a picture tour of this most interesting trip. Thank you, Kathy.
Shirley Lambert's great niece passed and Bonnie Young was recovering from knee surgery. We received updates on how both ladies were doing.
Shirley Lambert and Dorothy Sanchez checked into the Tuesday Evening Club CDs. It was decided by the membership to close out the CDs before maturity since the penalty is small on both. We will give the Salida Public Library the money from one CD with the understanding that they use it for Reference Materials. The other CD which was a scholarship will go into Upsilon's Chapter Scholarship Fund. This will be done as soon as Shirley can do it. Since this is the end of a very active Club in Salida, it was decided to have an article, picture, and
information on the Tuesday Evening Club put in the local newspapers and Omega Peaks.
The membership present looked at the Chapter Checkup Rubric for the Chapter Strengthening Process. Three areas of concern were noted: leadership (energy), meeting attendance, and membership. I noted that I needed to make more contacts with women teachers at Longfellow Elementary in Salida. This might lead to an increase
membership. Last year Coletta, Bonnie, and myself targeted Avery Parsons Elementary in Buena Vista. The other two areas were not discussed but will be at a later date.
Our April brunch will be April 26 at 11:00 a.m. in Salida at the Methodist Fellowship Hall for $12. Please mark this on your calendars. We need to guarantee 10. Hopefully, we will have two guests: Beth Barzdukas, Omega State President, and Cindy Demarest!
Since Bonnie was still recuperating, I volunteered to take over getting members to deliver flowers on February 14, 2014 from Mt. Meadows in Buena Vista. Members who said that they were available are: Dorothy, Janet, Kathy, Denise, Shirley, Bonnie (but she can't drive), Beth (was volunteered as she usually helps), Billie, and myself. I talked to Brenda at the florist's and she said one group may need to deliver flowers in Salida. I will be calling with all the details as soon as I know. A BIG THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
Hostesses in January were Denise Scifres and Dorothy Sanchez (she stepped in for Shirley). The food was delicious as usual! Thank you, ladies.
Our next meeting will be on February 18, 2014 in Buena Vista at the Grace Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. The program will be given by Janet Steiner, scholarship recipient. Hostesses are Coletta Sanchez and Bonnie Young. We need to talk about a new slate of Officers, Chapter Scholarship forms will be available (Denise has indicated
she would like to apply), and remember to bring a donation for Schools in Africa.
See you all soon.

HAPPY 2014, Ladies!
I hope you all enjoyed a Blessed Christmas and Joyous New Year!!
The members of Upsilon Chapter enjoyed their annual Christmas Brunch on December 7 in Salida at the United Methodist Fellowship Hall. The Methodist ladies once again provided a delicious brunch.... yummy food!!!
I asked them to serve brunch for us again at our final meeting of the year in April. Beth Barzdukas, Omega State President, was unable to make the Christmas Brunch, but I hope she will be able to join us in April.
For World Fellowship, I read a story, "The Littlest Angel." Each member in attendance received an angel ornament as a favor to go along with the story. Our Chapter collected $85 for World Fellowship. Thank you so much ladies!
Members also brought "Toys for Tots" to the brunch, & Kathy Roman delivered them to the Buena Vista STUCCO. Upsilon Chapter received a nice "thank you" note from the Club.
UPSILON'S NEXT MEETING WILL BE HELD ON JANUARY 21 IN BUENA VISTA AT THE GRACE CHURCH FELLOWSHIP HALL AT 6:00 P.M. Kathy Roman, a Scholarship Recipient, will provide the program. Denise Scifres and Shirley Lambert are hostesses.
We need to have a collection for "Schools In Africa" since we voted to split the World Fellowship Collection, but then decided to have another collection instead. Many members did not bring extra money to the Christmas brunch.
Upsilon Chapter has all but two biennial Omega State reports completed. The Education Excellence/Program Committee (Dorothy Sanchez, chair) and Finance Committee (Shirley Lambert, chair) have until February 1 to send their reports. We are keeping on top of all of our duties. Thank you!
I took a $75 check to Longfellow Elementary School for the Fourth Grade Field Trips. I presented it to Deb Colgate, a 4th grade teacher, and Chuck McKenna, principal. I took a picture and will get it to the newspapers and Omega Peaks. Perhaps I can get Janet to help me this that.
Bonnie Young will probably be asking members, "Who will be available to deliver Valentine's flowers?" Be ready.
See you soon,
Theresa
